Our Lady of Lourdes – A Message of Healing and Hope
In 1858, in the small town of Lourdes, France, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous, a humble 14-year-old girl. Over a series of apparitions, Our Lady revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception and called for prayer, repentance, and faith.
At Mary’s request, Bernadette uncovered a hidden spring at the Grotto of Massabielle—waters that soon became associated with miraculous healing. Since then, millions have journeyed to Lourdes, bathing in the spring’s waters with faith in its spiritual and physical healing, a practice often done with modesty and deep reverence.
Our Lady of Lourdes remains a profound symbol of compassion, purity, and divine mercy, offering comfort to the sick, the suffering, and all who seek peace.
I had the opportunity to go to France and visit Our Lady Of Lourdes! It was a beautiful experience that I highly recommend. I even did the sacred immersion baths.
Lourdes Baths or Piscines de Lourdes (in French)
These are sacred immersion baths located at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Pilgrims traditionally enter the baths individually, and the immersion is done in privacy with the help of attendants. While nudity was traditionally part of the ritual (for practical immersion reasons), modesty and dignity were always maintained — participants were discreetly covered with a cloth or towel, and the experience was deeply spiritual, not physical.
Important to note:
As of recent years, especially after COVID-19, full-body immersion has been replaced or supplemented with water gestures (e.g., pouring water on hands and face), though immersion may still be possible in certain circumstances.
The practice has never been about nudity, but about humility, healing, and faith — following the instructions believed to be given by the Virgin Mary to St. Bernadette.
The Lourdes Baths are a place of spiritual cleansing and healing, not just physical immersion.
